Bhadra Kaal, also known as Vishti Karana, is the 7th Karana in the 11-Karana Vedic cycle. It occurs 4 times in each lunar fortnight (roughly every 3-4 days), totaling ~8 occurrences per lunar month. Each Bhadra period spans approximately 6-13 hours—equivalent to half a Tithi (6° of lunar motion). Unlike Rahu Kaal which is daily, Bhadra appears on specific tithis and is considered one of the most inauspicious periods in Hindu astrology.
Bhadra is personified as the daughter of Surya (Sun God) and Chhaya, and the sister of Shani (Saturn) and Yamraj (God of Death). According to Vedic texts, she possesses a fierce and destructive temperament. In the Hindu Panchang, each Tithi (lunar day) consists of two Karanas, and Vishti (Bhadra) is the 7th of the 11 Karanas in this cycle. It repeats every 7th Karana, making it a recurring inauspicious window throughout the lunar month.
A Karana is half a Tithi, spanning 6° of angular distance between the Sun and Moon. There are 11 Karanas in Vedic astrology—4 fixed (Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga, Kimstughna) and 7 recurring (Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija, Vishti). Vishti (Bhadra) recurs as every 7th Karana in the cycle, appearing 4 times per Paksha (fortnight) and 8 times per lunar month.
Bhadra Kaal is believed to generate negative cosmic energy that disrupts harmonious planetary alignments. According to ancient texts like Muhurta Chintamani, the gods banished Bhadra from auspicious events after witnessing her destructive nature. Rituals and new beginnings initiated during her influence are said to invite obstacles, delays, and misfortune.
Interestingly, certain aggressive or confrontational activities are believed to yield favorable results during Bhadra: warfare, legal battles, surgery, using weapons, and confronting adversaries. This aligns with Bhadra's fierce nature—channeling her energy constructively.
According to Muhurta Chintamani and other classical Vedic texts, Bhadra's impact varies significantly based on her celestial abode (Bhadravasa) during a given period. The abode is determined by the Moon's position in a specific Rashi (zodiac sign) when Bhadra occurs.
When Bhadra resides on Earth (Prithvi Lok), her negative effects manifest at full strength. All important activities must be strictly avoided. This occurs when the Moon is in Cancer, Leo, Aquarius, or Pisces.
When Bhadra dwells in Heaven (Swarga Lok), her inauspicious effects are neutralized. Activities can generally proceed without major concern. This occurs when the Moon is in Aries, Taurus, Gemini, or Scorpio.
When Bhadra is in Pataal (Netherworld), her influence is moderate. Exercise reasonable caution but the period is less restrictive than Earth-abode Bhadra. This occurs when the Moon is in Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius, or Capricorn.
The abode (Bhadravasa) depends on the Moon's Rashi, Tithi, Vara (weekday), and other astrological factors. Traditional Panchangs specify the abode for each Bhadra occurrence. This ancient knowledge is preserved in texts like Muhurta Chintamani (by Daivajña Ramakrisha) and Jyotish Saar Sangraha.
