Argala: Jaimini's Deep Secret

In Jaimini Astrology, Argala is the concept of planetary intervention — which planets actively influence each house of your chart, and which planets obstruct that influence. Think of it as a tug-of-war between supporting forces (Argala) and blocking forces (Virodhargala).

Every house in your chart receives three types of Argala: Primary (from the 2nd house away), Secondary (from the 4th house away), and Tertiary (from the 11th house away). Each of these can be blocked by planets in the opposing house — creating Virodhargala. The net result determines how strongly a house is influenced.

Unlike Parashari aspects which are planet-to-planet, Argala is sign-based and cumulative. A house with net strength 3 has all three types of Argala active and unobstructed — making it one of the most dynamically influenced areas of your life.

What is Argala in Jaimini Astrology?

Argala literally means 'bolt' or 'latch' — like a door bolt that locks something into place. In Jaimini's system, when planets occupy certain houses relative to a sign, they 'bolt' their influence onto that sign. This intervention cannot be ignored — it actively shapes the results of that house.

The concept comes from Maharishi Jaimini's Upadesa Sutras (1.1.10–1.1.14). Unlike Parashari aspects where influence is calculated planet-to-planet, Argala operates sign-to-sign. Any planet sitting in the 2nd, 4th, or 11th from a house creates Argala on it.

The Three Types of Argala

Primary Argala (2nd house): The strongest form. Planets in the 2nd from any house directly intervene on it — like family wealth influencing your personality (2nd from 1st), or speech patterns affecting your career image (2nd from 10th).

Secondary Argala (4th house): Emotional and foundational support. Planets in the 4th from a house provide nurturing influence — like education supporting your career, or mother's guidance shaping your public image.

Tertiary Argala (11th house): Gains and network support. Planets in the 11th from a house bring aspiration and material benefit — like elder siblings helping your career, or social connections boosting your status.

Virodhargala — The Obstruction

For every Argala, there is a potential obstruction. Virodhargala comes from the house opposite to the Argala source:

• Against Primary (2nd): Virodhargala from the 12th house • Against Secondary (4th): Virodhargala from the 10th house • Against Tertiary (11th): Virodhargala from the 3rd house

When Virodhargala planets are equal to or stronger than the Argala planets (by count or benefic nature), they neutralise the intervention. The net strength score (0–3) tells you how many types of Argala remain effective after obstruction.

Reading the Net Strength Score

Net Strength 0: No effective Argala. The house operates without strong external planetary intervention. Results are largely determined by its own lord and occupants.

Net Strength 1: One type of Argala is active. Moderate external influence — one channel of intervention shapes the house's outcomes.

Net Strength 2: Two types active. Strong planetary intervention from multiple directions. This house's results are significantly shaped by external forces.

Net Strength 3: All three Argala types are effective and unobstructed. Maximum intervention — this is one of the most dynamically influenced houses in your chart. Events here are powerfully driven by planets in surrounding houses.

Myths vs Reality

  • Myth:

Argala is the same as Parashari aspects.

    Reality:

Argala is fundamentally different. Parashari aspects are planet-to-planet (e.g., Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th, 9th). Argala is sign-based intervention — any planet in the 2nd, 4th, or 11th from a house creates Argala on it, regardless of which planet it is. The mechanism, calculation, and interpretation are entirely distinct.

  • Myth:

More planets in Argala houses always means stronger results.

    Reality:

Not necessarily. If the Virodhargala house also has planets of equal or greater strength, the Argala is neutralised. A single benefic in the 2nd with no planet in the 12th creates stronger effective Argala than three planets in the 2nd opposed by four in the 12th. Quality and obstruction matter more than raw count.

  • Myth:

Argala only matters for D1 (Rashi) chart.

    Reality:

Argala principles apply to all divisional charts. Many advanced Jaimini practitioners analyse Argala in the Navamsha (D9) for deeper spiritual and relationship insights, and in Dashamsha (D10) for career intervention patterns. The concept is universal across Jaimini's framework.

FAQs

What is Argala in Jaimini Astrology?

Argala means 'bolt' or 'latch' — it is the concept of planetary intervention on a house. When planets sit in the 2nd, 4th, or 11th from any house, they create Argala (active influence) on that house. This is unique to Jaimini Astrology and different from Parashari aspects.

What is Virodhargala?

Virodhargala is the obstruction to Argala. Planets in the 12th house block Primary Argala (from the 2nd), planets in the 10th block Secondary Argala (from the 4th), and planets in the 3rd block Tertiary Argala (from the 11th). When obstruction equals or exceeds the Argala, it is neutralised.

What does Net Strength 0 mean?

Net Strength 0 means no effective Argala is acting on that house. All three types of Argala are either absent or fully blocked by Virodhargala. The house operates based on its own lord, occupants, and aspects — without significant external planetary intervention.

What does Net Strength 3 mean?

Net Strength 3 means all three types of Argala — Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary — are active and unobstructed. This is the maximum intervention possible. The house is powerfully influenced by planets in surrounding signs, making it one of the most dynamic areas of your chart.

How is Argala different from aspects?

Parashari aspects are planet-to-planet (e.g., Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th, 9th houses from itself). Argala is sign-based — any planet in the 2nd, 4th, or 11th from a house intervenes on it. Additionally, Argala has a built-in obstruction mechanism (Virodhargala) which Parashari aspects do not.

Which houses create Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Argala?

Primary Argala comes from the 2nd house, Secondary from the 4th house, and Tertiary from the 11th house — all counted from the house being analysed. For example, for the 1st house: Primary comes from the 2nd, Secondary from the 4th, and Tertiary from the 11th.

Can Argala be applied to divisional charts?

Yes. Argala principles are universal in Jaimini Astrology and can be applied to any divisional chart — Navamsha (D9), Dashamsha (D10), Saptamsha (D7), etc. Advanced practitioners use Argala analysis in divisional charts for deeper insights into specific life domains.
