Who Jupiter (Guru) is: the guru of the gods
In the Parashari tradition Jupiter — Guru, Brihaspati, the preceptor of the devas — is the greatest natural benefic, and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra seats it with Venus as a minister in the planetary cabinet. It signifies wisdom, knowledge, teachers, dharma, faith, scripture, ethics and law; it is the putra karaka (significator of children) and the dhana karaka (significator of wealth), and it also rules fortune, expansion, elders and priests, and in the body the liver and fat. In a woman's chart it is traditionally read as the significator of the husband. As a house significator it is the karaka of the 2nd, 5th and 11th houses, and it shares the 9th with the Sun and the 10th with the Sun, Mercury and Saturn.
Jupiter owns Sagittarius and Pisces, with its moolatrikona in the first 10° of Sagittarius. It is exalted in Cancer, most deeply at 5°, and debilitated in Capricorn, most deeply at 5°. Its natural friends are the Sun, the Moon and Mars; Saturn is neutral; Mercury and Venus are enemies. Beyond the full aspect on the 7th that every planet casts, Jupiter has special aspects on the 5th and 9th houses from itself, so it always touches three houses besides its own. It gains directional strength (digbala) in the 1st house and has none in the 7th. Its Vimshottari mahadasha runs 16 years, though the balance left at birth can be far shorter.
When Jupiter occupies a kendra from the ascendant (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) in Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer, it forms Hamsa Yoga, one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas. Gaja Kesari Yoga is counted differently — Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon, not the ascendant — and several texts add conditions before promising its full results. Guru Chandal Yoga, most often defined as Jupiter joined with Rahu, belongs to later tradition rather than Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and is judged by sign, dignity and house. One caution cuts the other way: in the Laghu Parashari tradition a natural benefic that owns kendras loses some of its beneficence (kendradhipati dosha). This applies to Jupiter for Gemini ascendants (lord of the 7th and 10th) and Virgo ascendants (lord of the 4th and 7th), and because it rules the 7th in both, it also carries maraka status.

Jupiter takes about a year to cross a sign and roughly 11.86 years to circle the zodiac, but the pace is uneven because it turns retrograde for about four months (≈120 days) once a year. As a result, roughly three birth charts in ten have Jupiter retrograde. On Thursday (Guruvar), after bathing, chant the Jupiter beej mantra — 'Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah' — traditionally 108 times on a rosary, in a calm and unhurried voice. A steady weekly practice matters more than a single long session.
Vishnu and Dakshinamurti worship
Jupiter is traditionally linked with Lord Vishnu. Reciting or listening to the Vishnu Sahasranama on Thursdays is a widely followed practice; in South Indian tradition, worship of Dakshinamurti — Shiva as the silent teacher — is also offered for Jupiter.
Honour teachers and teach freely
Jupiter is the guru, so the most direct remedy is how you treat knowledge and those who carry it. Seek the blessings of teachers, parents and elders, serve them where you can, and share what you know without charging for it — tutoring a student or guiding a newcomer both count.
Thursday giving
On Thursdays, give chana dal, turmeric, yellow cloth or books to a temple, a place of learning or someone in need. Books and study material for students are an especially fitting offering for Jupiter. Give within your means; the intent matters more than the amount.
