Hunger and the unfamiliar — Rahu’s house is the arena this life keeps pushing you toward, often through obsession first and mastery later. Ketu always sits in the opposite house, marking what you already know.

Detachment and the already-known — Ketu’s house is what you release, or master without effort and then lose interest in. In the 12th it points toward moksha; in the 7th, toward a partnership that must be chosen consciously.
Vedic vs Western: why your placements differ
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, anchored to the seasons; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the fixed stars. Today the two differ by about 24 degrees (the Lahiri ayanamsha), so a planet in the early degrees of a Western sign usually stands in the previous sign in your Vedic chart, and the ascendant — and with it every house — shifts by the same amount. If a Western chart puts your Saturn in Scorpio, your Vedic chart may well say Libra.

Q: What does it mean when a planet is in a house?
The house is the arena, the planet the actor. A planet in a house plays out its nature in that area of life — the 7th for marriage, the 10th for career — coloured by the sign it stands in and the planets that aspect it.
Q: How many planet-and-house combinations are there?
One hundred and eight: nine grahas across twelve bhavas. Your own chart holds nine of them at once, one for each planet.
Q: Are planets in houses the same in Vedic and Western astrology?
No. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal (Lahiri) zodiac, currently about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac, so a planet in the early degrees of a Western sign often moves into the previous sign in your Vedic chart.
Q: Which planets are benefic and which malefic?
By nature, Jupiter, Venus, a waxing Moon and an unafflicted Mercury are benefic; Saturn, Mars, the Sun, Rahu and Ketu are malefic. By function, every planet turns benefic or malefic for a given ascendant according to the houses it rules — which is why the same placement reads differently for different ascendants.
Q: Do I need my exact birth time?
For the houses, yes. A planet’s sign and nakshatra follow from your date; its house depends on the ascendant, which moves a full sign every two hours. Without a time we show the signs and mark the houses unavailable rather than guess.
