How birth times are checked

Where a birth time comes from

Every person starts as a researched record: the date, the time, the place, the clock the time was written on, and a citation for every source. The time's standing is one of five, and the page says it in words.

What holds at any time

The Moon moves about one nakshatra a day, so on many birth dates the nakshatra changes during the day; the page gives the hour of the change on the birthplace clock. The other planets usually keep one rashi all day. The lagna changes about every two hours, so without a sound time the page does not call it settled and gives a table by hour instead.

Clocks

A time is read on the clock it was written on: Indian Standard Time, the war-time clock of 1942 to 1945 (an hour ahead of standard), local time before 1906, or daylight time elsewhere. Every page names its clock and the basis for it.

Computation

All positions are astronomically computed by PanchangBodh's own engine in the Lahiri ayanamsa with whole-sign houses. Every chart passes two independent casts: the engine's Moon must agree with a separate computation of the same instant to 0.008 degrees, and for a researched time the lagna must be the same in both. A record that fails either check is not published.

Corrections

If a date, time, place or source looks wrong, write to namaste@panchangbodh.com. Corrections are noted on the page.
