Lagna vs Rashi

Two people born on the same day usually share a rashi but not a lagna. Why, and which to read when.

The lagna is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth; the rashi is the sign the Moon was in at that moment. The lagna changes roughly every two hours, while the Moon stays in a sign for about two and a half days. That is why two people born on the same day usually share a rashi but can have different lagnas.

Which to read your rashifal by: lagna or rashi?

In the Indian tradition, daily, weekly and yearly rashifal is read from the Moon sign, not the lagna. Rashifal describes transits, and transits are judged from the Moon — Sade Sati, too, is counted from the Moon sign. PanchangBodh's rashifal is built on the Moon sign as well. The deeper reading of your own chart, such as dasha results and the strength of the houses, is done from the lagna.

What is the Chandra kundali?

The Chandra kundali keeps every planet where it is, but counts the houses with the Moon's sign as the 1st house. It is also called the Chandra lagna. Astrologers read it beside the lagna chart: what shows the same way in both is held to be firm. The Sudarshana chakra reads from the lagna, the Moon and the Sun at once.

"Lagna chart" and "rashi chart" — one and the same

This mix-up is common. The birth chart, the lagna chart and the rashi chart are three names for the same chart: "rashi" there refers to the circle of twelve signs, not the Moon sign. The chart drawn with the Moon as the 1st house is a different one — the Chandra kundali.

And the Sun sign?

In Western astrology, your "star sign" is the Sun's sign, counted in the tropical zodiac. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, about 24 degrees behind today. So the "sun sign" in a magazine is often one sign ahead of your Vedic Sun sign. In the Vedic system the Sun sign relates to the soul and the father, but rashifal is still read from the Moon sign.

Questions about lagna and rashi

Which matters more, lagna or rashi?

They do different jobs. Your whole chart — houses and dasha results — is read from the lagna, so the lagna leads in a deep reading. For rashifal, transits and Sade Sati the Moon sign leads. Experienced astrologers read both together.

My lagna and rashi are the same — what does that mean?

It means the Moon was in the lagna at birth. Your lagna chart and Chandra kundali then look the same, and that sign's nature tends to show more strongly.

Which one gives the first letter of the name?

The naming syllable comes from the pada of the birth nakshatra, which is the Moon's position. So the "name rashi" relates to the Moon sign, not the lagna.

Does Gun Milan use the lagna or the rashi?

Ashtakoot Gun Milan works from the Moon's nakshatra and sign. The lagna comes in for Manglik Dosha and for comparing the houses of the two charts.

What can I know without a birth time?

From the birth date alone the Moon sign is usually known, unless the Moon changed sign that day. The lagna needs the exact time.
