The Moon is the mind. Where it sits in your chart shows what settles you, what unsettles you, and where your emotional weather forms. The house colours the mood; the waxing or waning phase decides how strongly it shows. The same placement reads steady for one person and restless for another; the free calculator below works out your Moon's house, sign, phase and aspects from your birth details.

Who Moon (Chandra) is: the mana karaka
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra places the Moon with the Sun in royal rank; the popular 'queen' is a later gloss on a feminine planet, not Parashara's word. The text's working definition is simpler and far more useful: the Moon is the mind. As mana karaka it signifies manas itself — mood, receptivity, the impressions you carry and how quickly you take a new one. Around that sit the mother, water and all liquids, comfort and happiness, travel and pilgrimage, pearls, whiteness and clothing. Two honest corrections belong here. Analytical learning, speech and memory-as-recall are Mercury's department, not the Moon's; and 'the Moon rules the masses' is an extension borrowed from mundane astrology, valid there but not a natal karaka. The rule giving the Moon the left eye in a man's chart is a medical convention too — classical eye-reading works from the 2nd and the 12th houses. Parashara lists the Moon as karaka of the 4th, and adds that the mother is judged from the 4th from the Moon.
Nothing changes a Moon reading as much as its phase. Chapter 2 makes the shukla paksha (waxing) Moon benefic and the krishna paksha (waning) Moon malefic, weakest near the new moon — and the commentary immediately supplies the rescue: a waning Moon joined or aspected by a benefic turns benefic anyway. The Yavana and Saravali grading measures the same quality by elongation from the Sun, which is why two people with the Moon in the identical house can read so differently. The page below states your own paksha from the panchang for your birth moment, so the phase enters your reading as a computed fact rather than a guess. Dignity is the second layer. The Moon owns Cancer alone, holds moolatrikona in Taurus from 4° to 30°, exalts in Taurus (deepest at 3°) and falls in Scorpio (deepest at 3°). It counts the Sun and Mercury as friends and everyone else neutral, with no natural enemy at all — note the asymmetry, since Mercury counts the Moon an enemy in return. It has no special full aspect, so it casts a full aspect only on the 7th from itself, while the graded partial aspects of chapter 26 apply to it as to every planet. Directional strength belongs to it in the 4th and is absent in the 10th, and its Vimshottari mahadasha runs 10 years.
The Moon forms no Pancha Mahapurusha yoga — those belong to Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn — but it anchors a family of yogas of its own, and these are usually the first thing said about a chart. Planets other than the Sun in the 2nd from the Moon give Sunapha, in the 12th Anapha, on both sides Durudhara. Where neither side is occupied, the talk of Kemdrum begins — though Parashara asks for more than that single condition and classical cancellations apply on top, so it is never a bare verdict; the question below and our Kemdrum Dosha page set out the full test. Gaja Kesari in Parashara asks Jupiter in a kendra from the ascendant or from the Moon, joined or aspected by another benefic and not debilitated, combust or in an inimical sign, whereas the bare 'Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon' most calculators use is Phaladeepika's Kesari yoga. Adhi yoga comes from benefics in the 6th, 7th and 8th from the Moon, and Chandra-Mangal from the Moon conjunct Mars — the aspect version of it is a modern extension. One term to keep exact: the sign the Moon occupies at birth is your janma rashi, the moon sign behind most predictive work and nearly all rashifal, while the nakshatra it occupies is your janma nakshatra, which seeds the Vimshottari dasha and the naming syllable. The moon sign is never 'nakshatra-based'.
These traits travel with the Moon into every chart — the house changes where the mind lands, not what the Moon is.
Moon in each of the 12 houses
What follows is the same Moon in twelve different settings. The house does not change the planet; it changes the ground the mind stands on, which is why the mother shows through the 4th, income through the 11th and withdrawal through the 12th. Read each section with your own paksha and the sign the Moon occupies, and where a full page exists for that house, the link goes considerably deeper than a summary can. One note on method: this page counts houses whole-sign, so the sign the Moon occupies is taken as its bhava. In the bhava chalit chart, where each house is measured from its own cusp, a Moon near the start or end of a sign can fall into the neighbouring bhava — so if your Moon sits within a degree or two of a sign's edge, read the adjacent house here alongside this one.
These are general tendencies modified by your whole chart — educational, not predictive, and not a substitute for a personal reading.
1st house — Self, body & temperament
The mind sits on the body itself. Mood shows on the face, temperament is receptive and impressionable, and other people read you quickly — sometimes more quickly than you would like. A waxing Moon here gives an open, appealing presence; a waning one turns the same sensitivity inward. Health follows mood more closely than most charts admit.
Read the full Moon in the 1st House analysis2nd house — Wealth, family & food
The 2nd house is wealth, family, speech and food, and the Moon brings all four under the mind's control. Money tends to arrive in tides rather than a straight line, and what you keep often depends on how settled you feel that month. Family — especially the mother's line and the women of the household — underpins your sense of security, and meals become emotional events rather than fuel. The voice carries feeling, which makes you persuasive when calm and transparent when you are not. From the 2nd the Moon aspects the 8th house, so inheritance, joint money and the in-laws' household stay emotionally live, and a sudden change in family circumstance registers deeply. In its own Cancer here the Moon guards savings instinctively and in Taurus it is exalted, while a waning Moon in Scorpio does better with an automatic savings arrangement than with willpower.
3rd house — Courage, siblings & effort
The 3rd is an upachaya house — one that grows with effort and time — which softens the usual caution about a waning Moon. With the mana karaka here, courage is felt before it is reasoned: you commit when the mood is right and stall when it is not, so building a routine that does not depend on enthusiasm is the single most useful correction available. Siblings, particularly sisters, stay emotionally central, and neighbours and short journeys recur through life. Writing, teaching, media and anything conversational suit the placement, though the depth of analysis behind it is read from Mercury's condition rather than the Moon's. From the 3rd the Moon aspects the 9th house, linking effort to fortune, father, teachers and long journeys — initiative here often pays out as opportunity there. Own-sign Cancer or exalted Taurus makes the effort steadier; Scorpio asks for patience, with rivals and with your own restlessness alike.
4th house — Mother, home & inner peace
The Moon's own ground: directional strength in the 4th, and the very house it signifies. Home, mother, land and vehicles matter deeply, and inner peace becomes the thing you organise life around. A waxing Moon here is among the steadiest placements in Jyotish. The later rule of thumb 'karako bhava nashaya' is not Parashara's and is worth weighing only when the Moon is waning or afflicted.

A creative, affectionate mind. Children occupy a large emotional space, romance is felt intensely and imagination outruns method. Mantra and devotional practice take hold easily, and teaching younger people suits you. Study goes well where the subject can be felt; dry analysis depends on Mercury, not the Moon. A waxing Moon in this trikona is genuinely fortunate.

The 6th is both a dusthana and an upachaya, and the Moon in it feels the first while slowly earning the second. The mind takes on other people's problems — patients, employees, dependants, debts — and worry becomes the standing occupational hazard, often landing in the stomach, in sleep and in the body's fluid balance, since the Moon governs the waters. Against that, the placement gives real capacity for service, nursing, healthcare, food work and anything requiring patient daily attention, and time is on its side: opposition and debt that loom large in the twenties usually thin out by the forties. From the 6th the Moon aspects the 12th house, which deepens the link between mental strain and rest — in this chart sleep is treatment, not luxury. A waning Moon here does best with regular hours, honest limits and a benefic aspect on it; Cancer or Taurus in the 6th gives the strength to serve without being drained.
7th house — Marriage & partnership
Partnership is where the mind settles. You need a companion to think against, and the spouse is often nurturing, home-loving, or connected with water, food or care work. Popularity in dealings comes easily. The risk is dependence on another's mood; the reward is a marriage with real emotional intimacy. Phase and aspect decide which side shows.
Read the full Moon in the 7th House analysis8th house — Longevity, depth & change
The 8th is a dusthana, but it is equally the house of longevity, inheritance, in-laws and everything that must be uncovered rather than announced — and the Moon there gives a mind drawn to exactly that. Intuition can be unusually accurate, interest in psychology, healing, research, mantra and occult study is genuine, and secrets are kept well, including your own. The difficulty is that feeling runs underground: upheavals are absorbed rather than expressed, and a krishna paksha Moon with no benefic support can keep old material alive long after the event has passed. From the 8th the Moon aspects the 2nd house, so emotional states reach family life, savings and speech directly, while joint finances and the in-laws' household stay significant throughout life. Treat this as depth to be used — therapeutic work, research, investigation — rather than as a warning; a waxing phase or a benefic aspect changes the tone of the placement substantially.
9th house — Fortune, dharma & father
The 9th is the trikona of dharma, fortune, the father and the guru, and the Moon there makes belief an emotional fact rather than an intellectual position. Pilgrimage, long journeys, teachers and philosophy settle the mind the way home settles other charts. The journeys that change this chart are the ones taken for a teacher, a text or a sacred place rather than for work, and where relocation follows, it usually follows that same thread. Fortune tends to arrive through a relationship — an elder, a teacher, a tradition — more than through a calculation. From the 9th the Moon aspects the 3rd house, feeding conviction back into courage, communication and siblings: what you believe becomes what you are willing to attempt. A waxing Moon here is straightforwardly fortunate; a waning one is carried on merit rather than on strength, which is what a trikona does for it, though Jupiter's aspect helps markedly, and Scorpio in the 9th suggests a faith arrived at through questioning rather than inheritance.
10th house — Career, status & public role
A public, changeable career. Work that touches people — care, food, hospitality, the public, water, travel — suits you, and reputation rises and falls with mood as much as with merit. The Moon has no directional strength in the 10th, so standing is earned through consistency rather than handed over; a waxing Moon makes that far easier.
Read the full Moon in the 10th House analysis11th house — Gains, networks & desires
The 11th is an upachaya of gains, income, networks, elder siblings and desires fulfilled, and the Moon there earns through people. Friendship is not a side activity but the mechanism: clients, patrons, communities and groups arrive through personal warmth, and women and older siblings frequently figure among the helpers. Income tends to be plural rather than singular, and it fluctuates with the size of the circle. Desires are many, felt vividly, and largely met — the trap is that satisfaction is short, so the next want appears before the last has been enjoyed. From the 11th the Moon aspects the 5th house, so gains feed children, creativity, learning and romance, and money often follows something first taken up for pleasure. Because gains here accumulate rather than arrive, a waning Moon loses less in this house than in most: what is added up over time outweighs the strength it began with. Cancer or Taurus in the 11th adds genuine loyalty to an otherwise wide and changeable network.
12th house — Expenditure, foreign lands & moksha
Withdrawal is where the mind recovers. Foreign lands, retreat, sleep and solitude figure large, dreams are vivid and privacy is a need rather than a preference. Spending runs high, often on comfort, travel or other people. The 12th is release and moksha as much as loss — a waxing Moon here makes a contemplative chart, not a defeated one.
Read the full Moon in the 12th House analysisWhich house is Moon strongest or weakest in?
Strongest: The 4th is the Moon's best house: it is the karaka's own ground and the seat of its digbala, so mind, mother and home reinforce one another. After that the kendras and trikonas — the 1st, 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th — give it scope, with the 5th and 9th especially kind to it. Above all of these sits phase: a waxing Moon well clear of the Sun is strong in any house, and a Moon in its own Cancer or exalted in Taurus is stronger still.
Most testing: The 8th and the 12th test a waning Moon most, because both ask the mind to absorb what it cannot easily express and a krishna paksha Moon has least to draw on. The 6th adds worry, debt and health to that list, though its upachaya nature hands much of it back with age, and the 10th is the odd case — a kendra, yet the one house where the Moon has no directional strength at all. Debilitation in Scorpio and a Moon very close to the Sun near the new moon weaken it in any house, and a benefic joining or aspecting it lifts every one of these.
Retrograde (Vakri) Moon in the houses
The Moon is never retrograde: it is the fastest body in the chart, covering a sign in about two and a quarter days and the whole zodiac in roughly 27.3 days, always direct. What phase does for the Moon is what retrogression does for other planets. A shukla paksha Moon, growing and well away from the Sun, is treated as benefic and gives its house openly; a krishna paksha Moon, especially close to the new moon, is treated as malefic and turns the same significations inward. Paksha bala is a formal component of shadbala rather than a rule of thumb, and the classical rescue noted earlier applies throughout — benefic company, or a benefic aspect, restores a waning Moon's standing. Your own paksha at birth is computed below.
Moon (Chandra) remedies, mantra and upay
Traditional remedies for the Moon work on the two things it signifies most directly — the mind and the mother. They are shared here for educational and cultural interest and are not a substitute for medical care, counselling or professional advice. No gemstone is recommended on this page.
The Moon's beej mantra on Monday
Recite 'Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah' on Mondays, ideally in the early morning and seated before a steady lamp or a vessel of water. Keep the day and the count consistent rather than long, since the Moon responds to repetition more than to intensity. A Monday in the waxing fortnight makes a natural starting point.
Serve the mother
The classical remedy for the Moon is not an object but a relationship: care for your mother, or for an older woman who holds that place in your life, in a practical and regular way. Time actually given, health looked after, the call that is actually made — this is how the tradition frames the remedy, because the Moon is karaka of both the 4th house and the mother.
Offer water or milk
Offering water at sunrise, and milk on a Monday, is the household form of this remedy, and keeping a clean water source at home belongs to the same idea. Where you can, extend it outward — drinking water arranged for travellers, animals or birds. The Moon governs liquids and comfort, and practices that move water outward are traditionally held to steady the mind.
Give rice, milk or white cloth
White things belong to the Moon: rice, milk, curd, sugar and white cloth. The donation is traditionally made on a Monday and, by preference, to a woman, to a mother with young children, or to a place where people are fed. Give what is actually needed rather than what is merely symbolic; the tradition treats the intention and the regularity as the working part.
Shared for educational purposes only. Pearl (moti) is the traditional Moon gemstone, but gemstones act strongly and are cautioned even within the tradition — never wear one without a full chart reading. Treat every remedy as supportive practice offered in the right spirit, not a guaranteed lever.
Moon in houses — frequently asked
Common questions about the Moon in a birth chart
Q: Does a waxing or waning Moon change the reading of its house?
Yes, and there is a simple way to see how far the phase has travelled. Strength here is measured by elongation — the Moon's distance from the Sun — and that is exactly what the tithi counts, since each tithi covers 12° of separation. At amavasya the gap is near zero and the Moon is at its weakest; at purnima it is 180° and the Moon acts entirely on its own light. The working line most practitioners use is that a Moon from roughly the eighth tithi of the bright half to the eighth of the dark half carries its house unaided, while one within two or three tithis of the new moon should be read as needing support from a benefic. The panchang line on this page reports the tithi and paksha of your birth moment, so you can place your own Moon on that scale instead of estimating it.
Q: In which house is the Moon strongest?
The 4th house, and the reason is digbala — directional strength. Each planet is held to be strongest in one direction of the chart: Jupiter and Mercury at the ascendant, the Sun and Mars at the 10th, Saturn at the 7th, and the Moon along with Venus at the 4th, the lowest point of the chart and the hour of midnight. That suits the Moon exactly, because the 4th is rest, home, the mother and the ground a person stands on — which is also what the Moon signifies as karaka, so significator and directional strength point to the same house. The opposite point is the price: at the 10th the Moon has no directional strength at all. Sign still counts alongside house — exalted in Taurus (deepest at 3°), moolatrikona in Taurus from 4° to 30°, own sign Cancer, debilitated in Scorpio.
Q: What is the difference between the moon sign and the birth nakshatra?
The consequence matters more than the definition: two people born with the Moon in the same sign, even on the same day, can run entirely different Vimshottari dasha sequences and be given different naming syllables, because both come from the nakshatra and not from the sign. A sign spans 30° and holds two and a quarter nakshatras of 13°20' each, so the Moon can change nakshatra without changing sign — and with it changes the dasha lord you begin life under and how much of that first period is left at birth. The janma rashi, or moon sign, is what rashifal and most predictive work address; the janma nakshatra is what the dasha sequence and the traditional name are built on. They are read side by side, and neither replaces the other.
Q: What is Kemdrum yoga in plain words, and can it be cancelled?
Kemdrum is reported far more often than it should be, because most calculators test only the single condition given in Phaladeepika — nothing on either side of the Moon. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra asks for three conditions together: no planet other than the Sun with the Moon, no planet in the 2nd or the 12th from the Moon, and no planet in a kendra from the ascendant. Classical cancellations then apply on top — the Moon itself in a kendra from the ascendant or from the Sun, Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon, or a benefic aspect on the Moon — so a chart can meet the bare definition and still not carry the yoga in practice. Treat any Kemdrum flag as a reason to examine the whole chart rather than a verdict on a life, and use our Kemdrum Dosha page to work through the conditions and the cancellations one at a time.
Q: What does the Moon mahadasha bring?
The Moon mahadasha runs 10 years in the Vimshottari system, and it is a period of mind and circumstance more than of hard events. Its themes follow the Moon's house, sign and phase in the birth chart: home, mother, property, water, travel, food and public contact come forward, and emotional life becomes the axis on which decisions turn. A strong waxing Moon usually brings comfort, domestic settlement and popularity; a weak or waning one can bring restlessness, frequent moves and health that tracks mood. The antardasha lords inside those 10 years decide the texture, so a Moon dasha is rarely uniform from start to finish.
