What is Combustion (Asta) in Vedic Astrology?

Combustion (Asta) is one of the most misunderstood afflictions in Vedic astrology. When a planet moves too close to the Sun in a birth chart, it loses its physical visibility in the sky — literally swallowed by the Sun's glare. In astrological terms, the planet's natural significations are suppressed by the Sun's overwhelming ego and authority.

But combustion is not destruction. Think of it as a talented artist working under a domineering boss — the talent exists, the work gets done, but the credit goes elsewhere. A combust planet's results manifest, but filtered through the Sun's lens: ego, authority, government, and fatherly control.

The Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra defines specific degree-thresholds (orbs) for each planet. When the planet-Sun angular distance falls within this orb, the planet is declared Asta. Our calculator uses these classical BPHS orbs and also shows the exact Sun-distance for each planet, so you can see not just IF a planet is combust, but HOW deeply burnt it is.

The 4 Levels of Sun-Proximity

🔥

Deep Combustion (Asta)

The planet is extremely close to the Sun (within 3°). Its voice is almost completely silenced — the Sun's ego dominates everything the planet tries to express.

☀️

Combust (Asta)

The planet is within the combustion orb and has lost its visibility in the sky. Its significations are suppressed — present but overshadowed by the Sun's authority.

⚠️

Approaching Combustion

The planet is just outside the combustion orb but moving closer. Its significations may already feel slightly dimmed.

Not Combust

The planet is well beyond the combustion orb. Its independent expression is intact — no suppression from the Sun.

Combustion Orbs — BPHS Standard Thresholds

PlanetDirectRetrogradeWhat Gets Suppressed
Moon12°12°Mind, emotions, mother, mental peace, and public reputation are all dimmed. Emotional clarity drops, and the native may feel psychologically "invisible" or unsupported.
Mars17°8°Courage, initiative, property matters, and physical vitality are suppressed. The native may struggle with assertion — their drive exists but can't express independently.
Mercury14°12°Intellect, communication, business acumen, and analytical thinking are overshadowed by ego. Decisions may be biased by pride rather than logic.
Jupiter11°11°Wisdom, dharma, fortune, children, and guru-guidance are eclipsed. The native may struggle to access their higher wisdom — ego overrides ethical judgment.
Venus10°8°Love, romance, marriage harmony, luxury, and creative expression are burnt. Relationships may feel ego-driven rather than heart-driven.
Saturn15°15°Discipline, patience, longevity, and karmic structure are weakened. The native may lack perseverance — starting many things but finishing few.

Combustion + Dignity: The Combined Effect

Combustion and dignity are independent dimensions of planetary strength. A planet can be exalted AND combust (powerful nature but suppressed voice), debilitated AND combust (the most challenging combination), or combust but in own sign (suppressed but self-reliant).

Key insight: Strong dignity softens combustion. An exalted combust planet still delivers its core significations — the combustion adds ego-friction but doesn't destroy the underlying power. Conversely, a debilitated combust planet faces a double challenge: weakened by sign AND suppressed by the Sun.

Classical Remedies for Combust Planets

The most effective remedies address the Sun's suppression directly:

1. Mantra Japa: Recite the combust planet's Vedic beej mantra 108 times daily. This strengthens the planet's independent voice and gradually builds its capacity to express itself despite the Sun's presence.

2. Surya Namaskar at Sunrise: Paradoxically, honoring the Sun reduces its suppressive quality. When you consciously respect the Sun's authority, its ego-pressure on other planets relaxes.

3. Weekday Donations: Donate items ruled by the combust planet on its specific weekday — green items on Wednesday for Mercury, white items on Friday for Venus, etc.

4. Fasting: Observe a fast on the combust planet's weekday to strengthen its karmic account.

5. Gemstone (with caution): The combust planet's gemstone can be worn after proper Prana Pratishtha — but only on expert advice, as gemstones for afflicted planets require careful assessment.

Myths vs Reality — Combustion Misconceptions

A combust planet is completely destroyed and gives zero results

Combustion suppresses, it doesn't destroy. A combust planet is like a talented employee whose boss takes credit for all their work — the ability is there, but the independent recognition is lost. The planet's results still manifest, but often through the Sun's lens (ego, authority, government). During its Dasha, results come but with frustration, ego-conflicts, or lack of acknowledgment.

Mercury is always combust because it's close to the Sun, so it doesn't matter

Mercury does stay near the Sun, but it is NOT always within the 14° combustion orb. When Mercury IS combust, the effects are real: communication becomes ego-colored, business decisions turn impulsive, and the native's analytical ability is clouded by overconfidence. The "it doesn't matter" myth has led many astrologers to miss critical Mercury combustion readings.

Combust Jupiter means no children or no guru in life

Combust Jupiter modifies, it doesn't eliminate. Children may come later, or through challenges. Guru-guidance may come through unconventional sources (books, experiences, inner wisdom) rather than a traditional teacher. The significations are redirected through the Sun's channel — authority figures may play the guru role, or the native develops self-taught wisdom under the Sun's influence.

Combust Venus always means divorce or no marriage

Combust Venus doesn't deny marriage — it changes its texture. Relationships may involve ego dynamics, one partner may dominate, or the native may marry someone in authority (government, leadership). The romance may feel "functional" rather than deeply emotional. Remedies like reciting Shukra mantras or wearing white on Fridays can soften the impact significantly.

Frequently Asked Questions — Combust Planets

What is combustion (Asta) in Vedic astrology?

Combustion occurs when a planet gets too close to the Sun in a birth chart. The planet loses its visibility in the sky — it's literally burnt in the Sun's glare. In astrological terms, the planet's natural significations are suppressed by the Sun's overwhelming ego and authority. The planet is still present and functional, but its independent voice is overshadowed.

Which planets can be combust?

Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn can be combust. The Sun cannot be combust (it IS the source of combustion). Rahu and Ketu cannot be combust either — they are shadow planets (chhaya graha) without physical bodies. Each combustible planet has a different orb threshold defined in the Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra.

What are the combustion orbs for each planet?

Per BPHS: Moon = 12°, Mars = 17° (8° retrograde), Mercury = 14° (12° retrograde), Jupiter = 11°, Venus = 10° (8° retrograde), Saturn = 15°. When the planet is within this degree-distance from the Sun, it is combust. Some texts use slightly different values — our calculator follows the standard BPHS thresholds.

Is combust Mercury important since Mercury is always near the Sun?

Yes, absolutely. While Mercury does stay relatively close to the Sun (maximum elongation ~28°), it is NOT always within the 14° combustion orb. Many charts have Mercury safely at 15-28° distance. When Mercury IS combust, communication, business thinking, and analytical ability are genuinely affected — decisions become ego-driven rather than logic-driven.

What is the difference between combustion and debilitation?

Debilitation is about sign placement — the planet is in its weakest zodiac sign. Combustion is about proximity to the Sun — the planet is too close to the Sun regardless of sign. A planet can be both (debilitated AND combust), which is the most challenging combination. A planet can also be exalted but combust — powerful in nature but its voice is still suppressed by the Sun.

Does retrograde motion reduce combustion effects?

There are two scholarly views. Some BPHS commentators argue that retrograde motion grants Chesta Bala (motional strength) which partially shields against combustion. Others say combustion rules apply regardless of direction. In practice, retrograde combust planets do show slightly more independent expression than direct combust planets — the retrogression seems to give them a "rebellious" edge that partially resists the Sun's suppression.

What remedies help with combust planets?

The most effective classical remedies: (1) Recite the combust planet's Vedic mantra — this strengthens its independent voice. (2) Surya Namaskar at sunrise — paradoxically, honoring the Sun reduces ego-suppression. (3) Donate items ruled by the combust planet on its specific weekday. (4) Wear the planet's gemstone after proper Prana Pratishtha (energization). (5) Fast on the combust planet's weekday. Always consult a qualified jyotishacharya before starting gemstone remedies.

How does combustion affect Dasha results?

When a combust planet's Mahadasha or Antardasha runs, its results come but with an ego filter. The native may achieve success in the planet's domain but feel underrecognized, frustrated, or in conflict with authority figures. For example, combust Jupiter Mahadasha may bring knowledge but through struggle — the native learns through ego-humbling experiences rather than graceful guru-guidance.

This combustion analysis follows the Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra (BPHS) — the foundational text of Parashara Jyotish. Combustion is one dimension of planetary assessment. For complete analysis, consult a qualified jyotishacharya.
