What is Planetary Dignity in Vedic Astrology?

Not all planets in your birth chart carry equal weight. A planet in its exaltation sign acts like a king on his throne — full authority, maximum power. The same planet in debilitation is like a prisoner — its abilities exist but cannot be expressed. Planetary dignity, as defined in the Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra (BPHS), measures this sign-based strength across 7 levels. Our calculator analyses your birth chart and reveals the exact dignity of all 9 planets — with dynamic interpretations that explain what each placement means for YOUR life.

The 7 Levels of Planetary Dignity — From Exalted to Debilitated

👑

Exalted

Uccha · Power 7/7

The planet is at peak power — like a king seated on his throne in the most hospitable kingdom. All its natural significations operate at maximum intensity.

💡 A CEO in their own company headquarters — maximum authority, full resources, complete confidence.

Moolatrikona

Mūlatrikoṇa · Power 6/7

The planet occupies its "power zone" — specific degrees within its own sign where it functions with near-exalted authority. Slightly below exaltation but stronger than regular own-sign placement.

💡 A CEO in their personal office within HQ — slightly less ceremonial than the throne room, but fully empowered.

🏠

Own Sign (Swakshetra)

Svakṣetra · Power 5/7

The planet is in the sign it rules — comfortable, at home, and free to express its nature without interference. It acts with confidence and produces reliable results.

💡 At home in your own house — you know where everything is, you set the rules, you're comfortable.

🤝

Friendly Sign

Mitra Kṣetra · Power 4/7

The planet sits in a sign whose lord is its natural friend. It's welcomed, given resources, and can function well — though not as freely as in its own domain.

💡 Staying at a close friend's house — you're welcomed, fed, given a good room, but it's still not YOUR house.

⚖️

Neutral Sign

Sama Kṣetra · Power 3/7

The planet is in a sign whose lord is neither friend nor enemy. It functions adequately but without any special advantage or disadvantage. Results are average — neither amplified nor suppressed.

💡 A hotel room — clean, functional, adequate, but you have no special status and no particular comfort.

⚠️

Enemy Sign

Śatru Kṣetra · Power 2/7

The planet is in a sign whose lord is its natural enemy. It faces resistance, its results are delayed or distorted, and it must work harder to deliver its significations. Not destroyed — but handicapped.

💡 Staying at a rival's house — you're tolerated but watched, given minimal resources, and constantly uncomfortable.

📉

Debilitated

Nīcha · Power 1/7

The planet is at minimum power — the exact opposite of exaltation. Its significations are weakened, suppressed, or produce reversed results. However, Neech Bhanga (debilitation cancellation) rules can neutralise or even reverse this weakness in specific chart conditions.

💡 In prison — your abilities are intact but your environment completely suppresses your capacity to act. Neech Bhanga = early parole.

Neech Bhanga Raja Yoga — When Weakness Becomes Strength

A debilitated planet is not a death sentence. Vedic astrology provides specific conditions under which debilitation is cancelled (Neech Bhanga), sometimes creating even more powerful results than a normally placed planet:

1. The lord of the debilitation sign is exalted or in a Kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th house) 2. The lord of the exaltation sign aspects the debilitated planet 3. The debilitated planet is aspected by its own sign lord 4. The debilitated planet is conjunct or aspected by Jupiter

When Neech Bhanga Raja Yoga forms, the struggle of debilitation transforms into unique capabilities — like a person who overcomes adversity and emerges stronger. This is why a debilitated planet should never be dismissed without checking for cancellation.

Myths vs. Reality — Common Dignity Misconceptions

A debilitated planet is always bad and will ruin that area of life

Debilitation weakens, but doesn't destroy. A debilitated planet in a good house with benefic aspects can still produce results — just with more effort. And if Neech Bhanga conditions are met (the debilitation lord is exalted, or the exaltation lord aspects the planet), the weakness transforms into unique strength.

Exalted planets guarantee success and happiness

Exaltation means maximum power — not maximum kindness. An exalted Saturn in the 1st house gives immense discipline and longevity, but also heavy responsibilities and a serious personality. An exalted Mars gives exceptional courage but also aggression. Power is neutral — the house, Dasha, and aspects decide whether it helps or challenges you.

Rahu and Ketu don't have dignity because they're shadow planets

Classical texts do assign exaltation/debilitation to Rahu and Ketu. Rahu is exalted in Taurus (or Gemini per some texts) and debilitated in Scorpio. Ketu follows the reverse. Their dignity influences how powerfully they express their karmic agenda in your chart.

Dignity is the only thing that matters for a planet's results

Dignity is one layer. A planet also draws strength from its house (Dig Bala), time of birth (Kaala Bala), motion (Chesta Bala), and aspects (Drik Bala). An exalted planet in the 6th house with malefic aspects may underperform a debilitated planet in the 10th with Jupiter's aspect. Always read dignity within the full chart context.

Planetary Dignity FAQs — Your Questions Answered

What is planetary dignity in Vedic astrology?

Planetary dignity (ग्रह गरिमा) refers to the strength or weakness a planet derives from its zodiac sign placement in a birth chart. Based on the Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra, there are 7 levels of dignity: Exalted (uccha), Moolatrikona, Own Sign (swakshetra), Friendly, Neutral, Enemy, and Debilitated (neecha). Each level determines how effectively a planet can deliver its natural significations.

What is the difference between exaltation and moolatrikona?

Exaltation is the single sign where a planet reaches peak power (e.g., Sun exalted in Aries). Moolatrikona refers to specific degrees within a planet's own sign where it functions with near-exalted authority (e.g., Sun's moolatrikona is Leo 0°–20°). An exalted planet is like a king on his throne in the best kingdom; a moolatrikona planet is like the same king in his personal power chamber — slightly less ceremonial but still fully empowered.

What happens when a planet is debilitated in the birth chart?

A debilitated planet is in its weakest sign — its significations (career for Saturn, love for Venus, etc.) tend to be delayed, diluted, or produce unexpected results. However, debilitation is NOT a life sentence. Neech Bhanga Raja Yoga — debilitation cancellation — can transform this weakness. Conditions include: the debilitation lord being exalted, the exaltation lord aspecting the planet, or the planet being aspected by its sign lord.

What is Panchada Maitri (five-fold relationship)?

Panchada Maitri is the classical system of natural planetary relationships defined in BPHS. Each planet has natural friends, enemies, and neutrals. When a planet sits in a sign owned by its friend, it gains strength (friendly dignity). When in an enemy's sign, it loses strength. This relationship is one of the foundations of dignity calculation. For example, Jupiter considers Sun, Moon, and Mars as friends — so Jupiter in Aries (Mars' sign) gets a friendly boost.

Can a debilitated planet still give good results?

Yes, through Neech Bhanga (debilitation cancellation). When specific conditions are met — such as the debilitation lord being exalted, or the planet receiving Jupiter's aspect — the debilitation is neutralised. Some classical texts suggest that a cancelled debilitation can produce even more powerful results than a normal planet, as the struggle itself creates unique capabilities.

Which planet is exalted in which sign?

Sun → Aries (10°), Moon → Taurus (3°), Mars → Capricorn (28°), Mercury → Virgo (15°), Jupiter → Cancer (5°), Venus → Pisces (27°), Saturn → Libra (20°). Rahu is exalted in Taurus and Ketu in Scorpio. Each planet reaches peak dignity at its specific exaltation degree.

How does planetary dignity affect Dasha results?

The Dasha lord's dignity heavily influences the quality of that planetary period. An exalted Dasha lord tends to deliver strong, visible, positive results in its domain. A debilitated Dasha lord may produce delayed, diluted, or challenging outcomes — though Neech Bhanga can modify this. Always check both dignity and Shadbala when evaluating a Dasha.

Is retrograde planet exalted or debilitated?

Retrogression does not change dignity — a retrograde Jupiter in Cancer is still exalted. However, retrogression adds an unconventional, intensified quality to the planet's expression. Some texts argue that retrograde planets gain additional Chesta Bala (motional strength). In practice, retrograde + exalted is a very powerful but unpredictable combination.

Planetary dignity analysis follows classical definitions from the Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra (BPHS). Dignity is one dimension of planetary strength — for complete analysis, also consider Shadbala, house placement, aspects, and Dasha timing.
