Indu Lagna, also called Dhana Lagna, is a special lagna for judging wealth and prosperity. It comes from the "kalas" of the 9th lords counted from the lagna and from the Moon: add the two, divide by 12, and count the remainder in signs from the Moon. The method is from Kalidasa’s Uttara Kalamrita.

How Indu Lagna is worked out
Each planet carries a fixed number of "kalas": the Sun 30, the Moon 16, Mars 6, Mercury 8, Jupiter 10, Venus 12 and Saturn 1. Rahu and Ketu are left out, since they rule no sign.
First take the lord of the 9th house from the lagna and its kalas. Then take the lord of the 9th sign from the Moon’s sign and its kalas. Add the two and divide the total by 12. Count the remainder in signs from the Moon’s sign, counting the Moon’s sign as the first. A remainder of zero counts as 12: the sign just before the Moon.
The result is a sign. Jagannatha Hora also attaches the Moon’s degree to it; we show that degree too, saying plainly that it is a convention, not part of the calculation.
The classical source
The method is in Kalidasa’s Uttara Kalamrita, Kanda I, section 4, sloka 27. It is counted from the Moon; the text gives no count from the lagna, so no second result is shown here. Indu Lagna is not part of the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra.
How Indu Lagna is read
By tradition, benefics in the Indu Lagna or in a kendra from it are good signs for wealth, and the dasha of a planet placed there can bring financial openings. Malefics there are read as wealth that comes through effort and struggle. Still, Indu Lagna does not decide wealth on its own; the 2nd and 11th houses, their lords and the dasha must be read with it.
Worked example: 4 July 1776, Philadelphia
This is the chart whose Jagannatha Hora results are published: 5:51 pm local time. The lagna is Dhanu and the Moon is in Kumbh.
- 1The 9th from Dhanu is Singh; its lord, the Sun, gives 30 kalas.
- 2The 9th from the Moon in Kumbh is Tula; its lord, Venus, gives 12 kalas.
- 330 + 12 = 42. Divided by 12, the remainder is 6.
- 4Counting Kumbh as the first, the 6th sign is Kark. Indu Lagna: Kark.
Jagannatha Hora’s published result is Kark 6°51′; our calculation also gives Kark 6°51′ (the degree is the Moon’s).
Why calculators disagree
Indu Lagna leaves little room for disagreement, but three slips are easy to make. One: counting from the lagna, when the text counts from the Moon. Two: mishandling a zero remainder, which means 12, the sign before the Moon. Three: adding Rahu and Ketu to the kala table.
Because Indu Lagna rests on the signs of both the Moon and the lagna, a small error in birth time can change it when either is about to change sign. That is why the result also says how many minutes earlier or later the birth time would have to be for it to change.

Lagna calculatorFrequently asked questions
What is Indu Lagna?
Indu Lagna is a special lagna for judging wealth and prosperity, also called Dhana Lagna. It is worked out from the kalas of the 9th lords from the lagna and from the Moon. The method is from the Uttara Kalamrita.
How do I calculate Indu Lagna?
Add the kalas of the 9th lord from the lagna and the 9th lord from the Moon, divide by 12, and count the remainder in signs from the Moon’s sign. The calculator above shows every step.
Are Indu Lagna and Hora Lagna the same?
No. Both are linked with wealth, but Hora Lagna comes from the time between sunrise and birth, while Indu Lagna comes from the 9th lords and the Moon. Hora Lagna is on the Special Lagnas calculator.
What if the remainder is zero?
Zero counts as 12. Counting the Moon’s sign as the first, the twelfth sign, the one just before the Moon, is the Indu Lagna.
Does Indu Lagna show how much money I will earn?
No. Indu Lagna is one indication of a wealth tendency, not an estimate of amounts. Wealth is judged in full from the 2nd and 11th houses, their lords and the dasha, read together.
