The lagna of prosperity, to the degree, every step shown

Degree-preciseRao and Rath definitionEvery step shown

Sree Lagna is a special lagna for judging prosperity, fortune and comfort. To find it, see how much of its nakshatra the Moon had crossed at birth, multiply that fraction by 360°, and add the result to the lagna’s longitude. The definition is the one taught by P.V.R. Narasimha Rao and Sanjay Rath.

How Sree Lagna is worked out

Each nakshatra spans 13°20′. Take the fraction of its nakshatra the Moon had crossed at birth: the Moon’s distance into the nakshatra divided by 13°20′.

Multiply that fraction by 360°: as much of the whole zodiac as the Moon has crossed of its nakshatra. Add this arc to the lagna’s longitude, and subtract 360° if the total passes it. The sign and degree you reach are the Sree Lagna.

Sree Lagna moves fast, about twice the speed of the ordinary lagna, because the motion of the lagna and of the Moon both feed into it. Small errors in birth time therefore move its degree.

The source, honestly

Sree Lagna has no verse in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, neither in the Sanskrit text nor in R. Santhanam’s translation. It is sometimes credited to Parashara; that is not correct. The definition used here is the one P.V.R. Narasimha Rao and Sanjay Rath teach, and it is the one in practical use today.

How Sree Lagna is read

In the Rao and Rath tradition, Sree Lagna is read as the door of Lakshmi: prosperity and comfort. Its lord, the planets in it and the aspects on it are studied, usually alongside the Jaimini dashas. Draw no conclusion from Sree Lagna alone; it is one side of the whole chart.

Worked example: 4 April 1970

This chart is from a published Sree Lagna lesson: 5:48:20 pm Indian Standard Time, 16°15′ N, 81°12′ E. The lagna is Kanya 14°28′ and the Moon is at Kumbh 28°34′, in Purva Bhadrapada.

  1. 1Purva Bhadrapada begins at Kumbh 20°00′; the Moon is 8°34′ into it.
  2. 28°34′ ÷ 13°20′ = 0.6425, or 0.6426 with the Moon’s arc-seconds included: about 64% of the nakshatra.
  3. 30.6426 × 360° = 231°20′.
  4. 4Lagna 164°28′ + 231°20′ = 395°48′; less 360° gives 35°48′, which is Vrishabh 5°48′.

The published answer is Vrishabh 5°48′32″. Our calculation gives Vrishabh 5°47′39″: the Moon’s positions differ by just 2 arc-seconds, which this method multiplies by 27 to just under an arc-minute.

Why calculators disagree

The first cause is a wrong method. One possible slip is to multiply the fraction by 30° instead of 360°, as if the Moon’s progress were spread over a single sign; no school in use does this. The arc is always added to the lagna’s longitude.

The second cause is the ayanamsha and the Moon’s position. A difference of one arc-minute in the Moon becomes about 27 arc-minutes in Sree Lagna, so a different ayanamsha or set of planetary tables moves the degree. The third is birth time: Sree Lagna advances roughly one degree every two minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What is Sree Lagna?

Sree Lagna is a special lagna for judging prosperity, fortune and comfort. It is the lagna plus an arc of 360° times the fraction of its nakshatra the Moon has crossed.

Is Sree Lagna in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra?

No. No verse for it has been found in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. The definition in use is the one taught by P.V.R. Narasimha Rao and Sanjay Rath.

Why does Sree Lagna change so quickly?

Because the motion of the lagna and of the Moon both feed into it. It moves at about twice the speed of the ordinary lagna, which is why the result says how far the birth time would have to move to change the sign.

How is Sree Lagna different from Indu Lagna?

Both relate to prosperity, but the methods differ. Sree Lagna is found to the degree and rests on the Moon’s nakshatra; Indu Lagna gives a sign only and comes from the kalas of the 9th lords.
