Who Mercury (Budh) is: the prince of the planets
In the Parashari tradition Mercury — Budh, also named Saumya, Vid, Jna and Bodhana — is the prince of the planetary cabinet described in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. It is a natural benefic when it stands alone or with benefics, and it is the most company-keeping of the planets: it takes on the nature of whatever it joins, and turns malefic in malefic company. Its significations are intellect and analysis, speech, trade and business, mathematics, writing and script, wit and education; among relatives, Phaladeepika gives it the maternal uncle and the sister's children. Among the seven tissues Mercury holds the skin. The nervous system is a modern attribution — the classical texts assign nerves and sinew to Saturn — so treat it as current usage rather than Parashara's word. In Parashara's list of house significators Mercury is the karaka of the 10th house, and the tradition also calls it the vidya karaka, the significator of education, and the significator of speech.
Mercury owns Gemini and Virgo, with its moolatrikona from 16° to 20° of Virgo. It is exalted in Virgo, most deeply at 15°, and debilitated in Pisces, most deeply at 15° — the only planet exalted in a sign it also owns, which is why a Virgo Mercury reads as unusually self-possessed.
