Who Venus (Shukra) is: the kalatra karaka
Venus — Shukra, known also as Bhargava (the son of Bhrigu) and as Ushanas or Kavya — is a natural benefic, and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra seats it with Jupiter as a minister in the planetary cabinet. Tradition also knows it as daityaguru, the preceptor of the asuras. Venus is the kalatra karaka, the natural significator of the spouse — read classically as the wife in a man's chart — and in Parashara's list of house significators it holds the 7th house. Its subjects are love and marriage, beauty, art and music, luxury, vehicles, comforts, jewellery and perfume, taste and refinement; among the seven bodily tissues it governs semen, and modern practice adds the reproductive system and the kidneys.
Venus owns Taurus and Libra, with its moolatrikona in the first 15° of Libra. It is exalted in Pisces, deepest at 27°, and debilitated in Virgo, deepest at the same degree. Mercury and Saturn are its natural friends, Mars and Jupiter are neutral, and the Sun and the Moon are its enemies. Venus has no special full aspect: like the Sun, the Moon and Mercury it casts its full aspect only on the 7th house from itself, although Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra also grants every planet graded partial aspects — a quarter on the 3rd and 10th, a half on the 5th and 9th, three quarters on the 4th and 8th. It gains directional strength (digbala) in the 4th house and has none in the 10th, and its Vimshottari mahadasha runs 20 years, the longest of the nine.
When Venus occupies a kendra from the ascendant — the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house — in Taurus or Libra, its own signs, or in Pisces, its exaltation, it forms Malavya Yoga, one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas, traditionally linked with beauty, comfort and a refined life. Everywhere else the method is the ordinary one: the house names the subject, the sign and dignity decide how freely the results flow, and the running dasha decides when. The one placement the texts openly dispute is Venus in the 7th; the 7th-house section below gives all three verdicts.

The 8th house rules longevity, sudden change, inheritance, in-laws, joint resources, research and the occult. Venus in a dusthana asks for maturity: pleasures and relationships pass through upheaval, and the ease it usually brings arrives after a change rather than before it. What the placement does give is access — money through the spouse's family, legacies or joint funds; genuine interest in research, healing, psychology, tantra or the study of what people hide; and a marked sensitivity to intimacy as an emotional rather than a social matter. From the 8th, Venus aspects the 2nd house, linking joint resources back to family wealth and speech. Since the 8th also governs the span of life, a benefic here is read by many as softening its harder passages. Two things need managing: secrecy in relationships, and money tied to people rather than to contracts.
9th house — Fortune, dharma & long journeys
The 9th house is fortune, dharma, the father, the guru, higher learning and long journeys. Venus here widens rather than deepens: luck tends to arrive through art, culture, refinement and people met on the way, foreign travel is frequent and often undertaken for pleasure or study, and attraction across distance, language or community is a recurring theme. Faith itself takes an aesthetic form — devotional music, temple art, beauty as a road to the divine — rather than austerity. The 11th house is gains, income, networks, elder siblings and the fulfilment of desires — the plainest match in the chart for a planet whose business is wanting and enjoying. Venus here usually widens the circle: friends are many and often influential, women frequently figure among the sources of help, and income arrives through art, beauty, luxury, entertainment or anything social. As an upachaya, the 11th improves with time, so gains tend to accumulate rather than arrive at once. From the 11th, Venus aspects the 5th house, so what is gained flows back into creativity, romance and children. This house multiplies desire as readily as income, and a friendship built on shared pleasure is easy to mistake for one built on trust. The comfort is real; the limit has to be set from inside.
12th house — Comfort, foreign lands & release
Classically one of Venus's better houses, not a plain loss: the 12th rules bed comforts, private pleasure, foreign residence and moksha. The sign occupying this house differs with every ascendant, so dignity has to be read alongside it. It aspects the 6th. Money leaves easily here.

Strongest: The 4th house is Venus's best seat: it gains directional strength (digbala) there, and the house's affairs — home, vehicles, land, peace of mind — are its own significations to begin with. A well-placed Venus there gives comfort that is actually enjoyed rather than only pursued, and the mother, the house and the vehicles usually show it plainly. Sign counts for as much as house, so its own Taurus and Libra, and its exaltation in Pisces, lift it wherever it sits.
Most testing: Venus is most tested when debilitated in Virgo, where analysis and service leave little room for enjoyment, and in the 10th house, the one position with no directional strength at all — a statement about directional power, not about failure. Combustion matters as much: within 10° of the Sun, and 8° when retrograde, the classical orbs hold Venus to be set, and its results grow uneven. The 6th house, with its debts, disputes and daily labour, asks the most patience of a planet made for ease.
Retrograde (Vakri) Venus in the houses
Venus never strays more than about 47° from the Sun, so it always sits near it in the chart. At full direct speed it crosses a sign in about 23 to 25 days, closer to a month on average, and up to roughly four months when it stations and turns back inside one sign. It goes retrograde about every 19 months for 40 to 43 days, which leaves it retrograde in only about seven birth charts in a hundred. Classically a retrograde planet carries motional strength (chesta bala), so a retrograde natal Venus is not a weak Venus; it reads as love revisited rather than love refused — old attachments that return, taste that runs against fashion, and values about money, beauty and partnership re-examined instead of inherited. That too is a tendency, weighed against dignity, aspects and the running dasha.
Venus (Shukra) remedies, mantra and upay
Venus responds to remedies built on beauty, cleanliness and generosity rather than penance. Friday is its day and white its colour, and in each practice below regularity counts for more than scale.
Beej mantra on Fridays
On Friday (Shukravar), after bathing, chant the Venus beej mantra — 'Om Draam Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah' — traditionally 108 times on a rosary, in an unhurried voice. Keeping it up week after week counts for more than one long sitting.
Worship of Lakshmi
Venus is traditionally linked with Lakshmi, and Friday is her day. Lighting a lamp, offering white flowers, and reciting or listening to the Shri Suktam or the Kanakadhara Stotram are widely followed practices; in many households the Friday evening lamp is the whole observance.
Friday giving
Give white cloth, rice, curd, sugar or perfume on a Friday to someone in need or to a temple. Tradition prefers small and regular giving to one large gesture, and holds that offering it without announcement matters more than the quantity.
Practise an art, keep things clean
The most direct Venus remedy is to use Venus: learn music, sing, draw, dance or write, and keep your surroundings, clothes and speech clean and pleasant. Respect toward women, and toward one's spouse in particular, is the tradition's conduct-based remedy for this planet.

Q: In which house is Venus strongest in Vedic astrology?
The 4th house, by directional strength — but dignity decides more than position does, and the order is worth knowing. Venus in its own Taurus or Libra, or exalted in Pisces, performs well from anywhere; put one of those three signs in a kendra — the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th — and Malavya Yoga, the Venus member of the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas, is formed. After that come the houses whose subjects Venus already owns: the 2nd for wealth and speech, the 11th for gains and the 12th for private comfort, all congenial ground. And digbala is only one of the six strengths (shadbala) by which a planet is judged, so a Venus without it — in the 10th, for instance — is not thereby a weak Venus.
Q: What does a combust Venus mean, and how close to the Sun is combust?
Combustion (asta) is a planet setting in the Sun's glare. By the classical orbs of the Surya Siddhanta and the translator's table in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Venus is combust within 10° of the Sun, and within 8° when retrograde — and since Venus never goes more than about 47° from the Sun, combust Venus is common in birth charts. Such a Venus is read as a significator under strain: comfort, marriage and confidence in one's own taste take longer to feel secure. Several schools use much tighter orbs, and dignity, aspects and the running dasha all modify the outcome, so it is never a verdict.
Q: Is "karako bhava nashaya" — a significator spoiling its own house — a real classical rule?
It is a rule of thumb, not a sutra. The line appears nowhere in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, and its origin is disputed; classical practice weighs it only when the significator is itself under pressure — weak, combust, debilitated, badly aspected or in a dusthana — and even then as one factor among many. It is also not a Venus rule: by the same logic the Sun would damage the 9th house, the Moon the 4th and Jupiter the 5th, which no text asserts as a blanket verdict. The argument is loudest over Venus in its own 7th house, where classical opinion genuinely splits three ways between Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Phaladeepika and Saravali, and the 7th-house section above sets out each. The sound method is to read the significator's dignity, its dispositor and the running dasha, and to let the maxim raise a question rather than settle one.
Q: What is Malavya Yoga and what does Venus need to form it?
Malavya Yoga is the Venus member of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas. It needs both conditions together: Venus in a kendra counted from the ascendant — the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house — and Venus in its own sign, Taurus or Libra, or in its exaltation sign, Pisces. Venus exalted in Pisces in the 3rd house does not form it, and Venus in a kendra in Gemini does not either. Tradition links the yoga with beauty, comfort, vehicles, a happy married life and a refined reputation, but its results still depend on aspects, conjunctions, combustion and the dasha in force.
