Ghatasthapana is two acts done as one. First is the sowing: a wide clay pot is filled with clean soil and jau — barley — is scattered in it and lightly watered, to sprout green through the nine days as a living reading of the coming harvest and the goddess's favour. Then the kalash: a copper or brass pot is filled with water, a thread tied at its neck, mango leaves set around the rim and a whole coconut wrapped in red cloth placed on top.
