What is Graha Yuddha?

Graha Yuddha — literally 'planetary war' — is one of the most dramatic conditions in Vedic astrology. It occurs when two true planets come within 1 degree of each other in sidereal longitude. At this proximity, neither planet can function independently. One wins, one loses, and the power dynamic between them shapes the native's life in the house where the battle takes place.

Only five planets can fight: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn. The Sun doesn't fight — it burns (combustion). The Moon is exempt as a luminary. Rahu and Ketu, being shadow planets, don't participate.

Graha Yuddha is rare. Most birth charts have zero planetary wars. When it does appear, it is a significant chart feature — a concentrated zone of tension and power that deserves careful reading.

This calculator examines your birth chart for any Graha Yuddha, identifies the victor and the defeated, and explains what this means for the specific house domains involved.

Victor vs Defeated — What Changes?

🏆

War Victor (Vijayī)

This planet won the planetary war. Its significations dominate over the defeated planet. The native experiences this planet's themes with amplified strength in the house where the war occurred.

⚔️

War Defeated (Parājita)

This planet lost the planetary war. Its natural significations are weakened — not destroyed, but subordinated to the victor's agenda. The native must work harder to access this planet's gifts.

☮️

No War (Shānta)

This planet is not within 1° of any other true planet. It operates independently, free from the pressures of planetary war.

War Eligibility & Natural Strength Rank

BPHS — Graha Yuddha Eligibility

PlanetEligible?RankVictory Effect
Mars#5When Mars wins a planetary war, the native's courage, initiative, and competitive instinct are supercharged. Property matters, sibling relationships, and any domain requiring aggression or physical energy are strengthened. The losing planet's significations become subordinate to Mars's agenda.
Mercury#4When Mercury wins, intellect and communication dominate. The native's analytical ability, business acumen, and verbal dexterity overpower the losing planet's domain. Writing, commerce, and education thrive at the losing planet's expense.
Jupiter#3When Jupiter wins, wisdom, dharma, and fortune prevail over the losing planet. The native's philosophical depth, teaching ability, and good fortune expand at the expense of the defeated planet's domain. Children, higher education, and spiritual pursuits flourish.
Venus#2When Venus wins, love, beauty, luxury, and creative expression dominate the relationship between the two warring planets. The native's artistic gifts, romantic life, and material comforts expand. The losing planet must serve Venus's agenda of pleasure and harmony.
Saturn#1When Saturn wins — and Saturn is the strongest planet in war by natural rank — the native develops an extraordinary capacity for discipline, endurance, and long-term strategy. Saturn imposes its slow, methodical nature on the losing planet, forcing its significations to mature through delays and hard work.
SunThe Sun does not participate in Graha Yuddha — it is the king. Proximity to Sun is combustion, not war.
MoonThe Moon does not participate in Graha Yuddha — it is the queen and a luminary.
RahuRahu is a shadow planet (Chhaya Graha) and does not participate in classical Graha Yuddha.
KetuKetu is a shadow planet (Chhaya Graha) and does not participate in classical Graha Yuddha.

How the Winner is Determined — BPHS Rules

How does one planet defeat another? BPHS and classical texts lay out specific criteria, considered in order of importance:

1. Northern Latitude (Declination). The planet with more northern celestial latitude generally wins. This is the primary classical criterion — a planet positioned higher in the sky holds the strategic advantage.

2. Apparent Brightness. The brighter planet wins. In astronomical terms, the planet with the lower apparent magnitude (brighter to the naked eye) has the advantage. Venus and Jupiter, being naturally bright, have an inherent edge here.

3. Positional Strength (Sthana Bala). The planet with higher positional strength in the Shadbala system gains an advantage. This includes sign dignity (exalted vs debilitated), house placement, and directional strength.

4. Natural Strength Ranking. Per BPHS, the natural war-strength ranking is: Saturn (strongest) > Venus > Jupiter > Mercury > Mars (weakest). This is the tiebreaker when other factors are equal.

In practice, the API computes these factors astronomically and returns the definitive victor. The result accounts for the exact sky conditions at the moment of birth.

Working With Graha Yuddha in Your Chart

Graha Yuddha doesn't need 'curing' — it needs understanding and strategic navigation. Here's how to work with it:

1. Strengthen the defeated planet. The most direct remedy is to strengthen the losing planet through its gemstone (worn on the correct finger, on the correct day, after proper energisation) or through mantra recitation. This doesn't reverse the war — it gives the defeated planet more resources to work with.

2. Honour both planets' weekdays. Perform charitable acts (daan) associated with both the victor and the defeated planet on their respective weekdays. This balances the power dynamic rather than fighting it.

3. Identify the war-house domain. The house where Graha Yuddha occurs is the life area most affected. Direct conscious effort toward that domain — if it's the 7th house, invest deliberately in partnership skills. If it's the 10th, be more intentional about career strategy.

4. Watch Dasha periods. The most intense effects of Graha Yuddha manifest during the Dasha or Antardasha of either warring planet. During these periods, the power dynamic becomes especially pronounced.

5. Don't fight the victor. The single biggest mistake is trying to suppress the winning planet's influence. Instead, let the victor lead in its domain, and find creative ways to express the defeated planet's energy through complementary channels.

Myths vs Reality — Planetary War

Graha Yuddha always destroys the losing planet completely

The defeated planet is weakened, not destroyed. Its significations still operate — they just become subordinate to the victor's agenda. Think of it as a power dynamic, not an annihilation. A debilitated planet losing a war is severely weakened, but an exalted planet losing a war still retains significant strength.

Any two planets close together are automatically in Graha Yuddha

Graha Yuddha has strict rules: (1) Only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn participate — Sun, Moon, Rahu, and Ketu are exempt. (2) The planets must be within 1° of longitude. (3) Sun's proximity creates combustion, not war. Two planets at 2° distance are close but NOT in Graha Yuddha.

The bigger planet always wins Graha Yuddha

Victory in Graha Yuddha depends on multiple factors — not just physical size. BPHS considers apparent brightness, latitude (declination), and positional strength. A Mercury in its own sign can defeat a Jupiter in enemy sign. The context of dignity, speed, and house position all affect the outcome.

Graha Yuddha is very common in birth charts

Graha Yuddha is actually rare. Two planets must be within 1° of each other among just five eligible planets. Most birth charts have zero planetary wars. When it does occur, it is a significant chart feature that deserves careful analysis — precisely because it is uncommon.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Graha Yuddha (Planetary War) in Vedic astrology?

Graha Yuddha occurs when two true planets (Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, or Saturn) come within 1 degree of each other in longitude. This tight conjunction creates a "war" where one planet wins and one loses, based on brightness, latitude, and positional strength. The victor's significations dominate, while the loser's are weakened. Sun, Moon, Rahu, and Ketu do not participate in Graha Yuddha.

Which planets can participate in Graha Yuddha?

Only the five true planets: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn. The Sun is exempt because proximity to Sun creates combustion (Asta), not war — the Sun is the king and doesn't fight. The Moon is a luminary and exempt. Rahu and Ketu are shadow planets (Chhaya Graha) and don't participate.

How close do planets need to be for Graha Yuddha?

The classical threshold is within 1 degree of sidereal longitude. Some texts use up to 5° for a weaker form of war, but the strongest and most impactful Graha Yuddha occurs within 1°. Our calculator uses the standard 1° threshold from BPHS.

How is the winner of Graha Yuddha determined?

BPHS and classical texts use several factors: (1) The planet with more northern latitude generally wins, (2) The brighter planet wins, (3) The planet with higher positional strength (Sthana Bala) has an advantage. In practice, our API uses comprehensive astronomical calculations to determine the victor based on these combined factors.

Is Graha Yuddha common in birth charts?

No — Graha Yuddha is relatively rare. Most birth charts have no planetary wars at all. Among the five eligible planets, the requirement for two to be within 1° of each other is a tight constraint. When it does appear, it is a significant chart feature worth careful interpretation.

What happens to the defeated planet in Graha Yuddha?

The defeated planet's significations are weakened — not destroyed. It still operates, but its results come with more difficulty, delay, or interference from the victor's energy. The native must work harder to access the defeated planet's gifts. The severity depends on the defeated planet's dignity and house placement.

Can a debilitated planet win a Graha Yuddha?

It is theoretically possible but rare. A debilitated planet lacks positional strength, which is one of the key factors in determining the war victor. However, if the debilitated planet has significantly higher brightness or more favorable latitude, it could still win. The combination of war-victory + debilitation would create a complex and contradictory influence.

Does Graha Yuddha affect the house where it occurs?

Yes — the house where the war occurs becomes an area of tension and power dynamics in the native's life. The significations of that house are coloured by the war's outcome. For example, Graha Yuddha in the 7th house directly affects partnerships and marriage, with the victor's nature shaping how those relationships play out.

This tool uses the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsha) and high-precision astronomical data. Graha Yuddha detection uses the 1° longitude threshold per BPHS. Victor determination is based on astronomical brightness, latitude, and positional strength. Results are educational — always consult a qualified Jyotishacharya for personalised interpretation.
