In KP Astrology, the sub lord is everything. If you understand nothing else about KP, understand this: the sub lord of a house cusp is the "judge" who delivers the final verdict on that house's matters. The sign lord sets the stage, the star lord writes the script, but it's the sub lord who decides whether the show goes on or gets cancelled.

This page generates two clean tables: Cuspal Sub Lords (which sub lord governs each of your 12 house cusps) and Planetary Sub Lords (which sub lord each of your 9 planets sits under). Together, these two tables give you a complete map of who controls what in your chart.

KP Sub Lord Table — What Each Column Means

FieldDescription
Cusp / PlanetThe row identifier. In the Cuspal table, rows are numbered 1-12 (one per house). Each house governs a specific life area — 1st: health/self, 2nd: wealth/family, 3rd: siblings/travel, 4th: home/property, 5th: children/education, 6th: enemies/competition, 7th: marriage/partners, 8th: longevity/inheritance, 9th: luck/higher education, 10th: career/fame, 11th: gains/wishes, 12th: losses/foreign.
Degree (Formatted)The exact zodiac position, shown as "24° Aquarius 45′ 05″". For cusps, this is where the house boundary starts. For planets, this is the planet's current longitude.
SignThe zodiac sign where this cusp or planet falls. Shown as text (e.g., "Aquarius") — a lighter format than the full birth chart. The sign determines the sign lord (Level 3 significator).
Sign LordThe planet that rules the sign. Venus for Taurus/Libra, Mars for Aries/Scorpio, etc. In KP, this is Level 3 — important but ranked below star lord and sub lord.
Star LordThe nakshatra lord — the SOURCE of results. This planet determines what kind of results flow through this cusp or planet. In KP, the star lord outranks the sign lord.
Sub LordTHE most important column — the "judge." For cusps: this planet decides if the house's promise is fulfilled or denied. For planets: this shapes what the planet delivers during its dasha. This is the column you should focus on first.
Sub-Sub LordFine-tunes timing. Advanced practitioners use this for pinpointing exact pratyantar dasha activation. Beginners can safely focus on star lord and sub lord first.
House (Planets Only)Which Placidus house the planet occupies. Shown only in the planetary table. This determines which house the planet is a Level 1 significator for.
Retrograde (Planets Only)Whether the planet is retrograde. Shown only in the planetary table. In KP, retrograde planets are functional — they don't lose strength, but may signal delayed or revisited results.

What Is a Sub Lord and Why Does It Matter?

The sub lord is KP's unique contribution to astrology. No other system has it. Here's how it works: every nakshatra (13°20' of the zodiac) is divided into 9 unequal sub-portions. These portions are proportional to the Vimshottari dasha years of the 9 planets. Ketu gets the smallest slice (7/120), Venus gets the largest (20/120).

Why the sub lord is the "judge": When you ask "Will I get married?", KP doesn't look at Venus's strength or the 7th lord's aspects. It looks at one thing: the sub lord of the 7th cusp. If that sub lord signifies houses 2, 7, and 11 (the marriage-supportive houses), marriage is "promised." If it signifies 1, 6, 10, 12 (the marriage-detrimental houses), it's "denied." This binary clarity is what makes KP fundamentally different from interpretive systems.

Cuspal vs Planetary sub lords: A cuspal sub lord tells you whether an EVENT (marriage, job, health) is promised. A planetary sub lord tells you what KIND of results a planet will deliver. Both are critical. The cuspal sub lord answers "will it happen?", the planetary sub lord answers "what will happen when this planet activates?"

K.S. Krishnamurti, KP Reader II (1964), Chapter on "Sub Lord — The Deciding Factor." The sub lord concept is the single most referenced innovation in all KP literature, described as the reason KP achieves higher predictive specificity than traditional systems.

How to Read the Sub Lord Tables

🏠

Cuspal Sub Lord Table

Shows the sub lord for each of your 12 house cusps. For any life question, find the relevant house cusp and check its sub lord. The sub lord's house significations determine the answer. Marriage → 7th cusp sub lord. Career → 10th cusp sub lord. Health → 1st cusp sub lord.

🪐

Planetary Sub Lord Table

Shows the sub lord for each of your 9 planets. A planet's results are shaped by the sub lord it sits under. Venus under Jupiter's sub gives wisdom-oriented relationships. Venus under Saturn's sub gives delayed but stable partnerships. The same planet, completely different life expression.

Cross-Reference Both Tables

The real power of KP comes from reading both tables together. Step 1: Check the cuspal sub lord — is the event promised? Step 2: Find which planets signify those supportive houses. Step 3: Check those planets' sub lords — which dasha period will they activate in? This three-step process is the core KP analysis workflow.

KP Sub Lord — Common Misconceptions

"The sub lord of a planet matters more than the cuspal sub lord."

For event prediction (will X happen?), the cuspal sub lord is king. For understanding what a planet will do during its dasha, the planetary sub lord matters. They answer different questions — both are essential, neither replaces the other.

"All 249 sub divisions are equal."

They are NOT equal. Sub divisions are proportional to Vimshottari dasha years. Venus's sub is the widest (1°46' 40"), Ketu's is the narrowest (0°46' 40"). This is by design — longer dasha periods correspond to wider sub-divisions.

"You need the sub-sub lord for basic predictions."

For most event-level questions, the star lord and sub lord are sufficient. The sub-sub lord is a refinement tool for advanced practitioners who need to pinpoint exact timing within a sub-sub period. Beginners should master the star lord and sub lord first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1.What is the cuspal sub lord in KP astrology?
The cuspal sub lord is the planet that rules the sub-division (within a nakshatra) where a house cusp falls. In KP, this sub lord is the "final judge" for that house's matters. For example, the sub lord of the 7th cusp determines whether marriage is promised or denied in your chart.
Q2.How is the sub lord calculated?
Each nakshatra (13°20') is divided into 9 unequal sub-portions, proportional to the Vimshottari dasha years of the 9 planets. The order follows the dasha sequence starting from the nakshatra lord. The sub lord is the planet whose portion contains the cusp or planet's exact degree.
Q3.What is the difference between sign lord, star lord, and sub lord?
Sign lord: the planet ruling the zodiac sign (e.g., Mars for Aries). Star lord: the planet ruling the nakshatra (e.g., Ketu for Ashwini). Sub lord: the planet ruling the specific sub-division within that nakshatra. In KP, the hierarchy is Sub Lord (judge) > Star Lord (source of results) > Sign Lord (environment).
Q4.Why are cuspal and planetary sub lord tables shown separately?
They answer different questions. Cuspal sub lords tell you if an event is promised (e.g., Will I marry?). Planetary sub lords tell you what a planet will deliver during its dasha period. Cross-referencing both gives you the complete KP analysis.
Q5.Can the same planet be sub lord of multiple cusps?
Yes, absolutely. One planet can be the sub lord of several cusps. This makes that planet extremely important in your chart — it's the "judge" for multiple life areas simultaneously.
Q6.What does sub lord "signifying" a house mean?
A sub lord "signifies" a house if it occupies that house, owns that house, or its star lord occupies/owns that house. When checking if marriage is promised, you check if the 7th cusp sub lord signifies houses 2, 7, and 11 — the trio of marriage-supportive houses in KP.
