From Ancient Texts
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra
अस्तं गते तु सौम्ये च क्रूरे वा सूर्यसन्निधौ।
तद्बलं हीयते सर्वं फलं नैव प्रदीयते॥
astaṃ gate tu saumye ca krūre vā sūryasannidhau
tadbalaṃ hīyate sarvaṃ phalaṃ naiva pradīyate
When a benefic or malefic planet becomes combust near the Sun, its strength diminishes and it cannot deliver its results.
— Maharshi Parashara
How Mercury Combustion Happens - Astronomical Explanation
Mercury orbits the Sun in approximately 88 days and passes through different relative positions to the Sun as observed from Earth.
When Mercury comes within 14 degrees of the Sun, it is considered combust. Due to this proximity, Mercury is lost in the Sun's brilliance and becomes invisible to the naked eye.
In Vedic astrology, a combust Mercury is considered weak. It affects intellect, communication, and business capabilities.
How it's calculated today:
Sun-Mercury angular distance ≤ 14°

Mercury Combustion Pattern and Frequency
In 2027, there are 7 Mercury combustion periods.
Mercury combustion periods typically last 20–40 days. Being the closest planet to the Sun, Mercury is frequently near it.
