This Sankalp mantra is presented for educational purposes. Please consult your family priest or Acharya for guidance.

What is Sankalp?

Sankalp (Sanskrit: संकल्प) means “firm resolve” or “determined intention.” In Hindu ritual practice, taking Sankalp before any Puja, Vrata, Daan, Havan, or Samskara is considered essential. It is the performer's formal declaration of when, where, and why they are performing the ritual.

The Sankalp mantra encodes the entire cosmic time framework — from the Kalpa and Manvantara down to the Samvatsara (year), Ayana (solstice), Ritu (season), Masa (month), Paksha (fortnight), Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga, and Karana. It also anchors the ritual in space (Jambudvipe Bharatavarshe...) and identity (Gotra and name).

According to the Shastras, a ritual performed without Sankalp is considered incomplete. Taking Sankalp focuses the mind and ensures the full fruit of the Puja is received.

How to Take Sankalp — Step by Step

  1. 1

    Perform Achamana

Sit facing East or North. Sip water three times from your right palm while chanting "Om Keshavaya Namah", "Om Narayanaya Namah", "Om Madhavaya Namah". Wipe your lips after each sip.

  2. 2

    Hold the ritual items

In your right hand, take water, akshat (unbroken rice grains), flowers, and a small coin (dakshina). Hold your right wrist with your left hand. This posture is called "savya" — for Pitru karmas, the thread and hand positions are reversed (apasavya).

  3. 3

    Face the correct direction

For all Deva karmas (Puja, Havan, Vrata), face East or North. For Pitru karmas (Shraddha, Tarpan, Pind Daan), face South.

  4. 4

    Recite the Sankalp mantra

Read the mantra clearly and without haste. Fill in your Gotra and name at the designated places. Name the specific Puja or Vrata you are about to perform. Use the calculator above to generate the mantra with today's correct panchang elements.

  5. 5

    Release the water

After completing the recitation, release the water and items from your right hand onto the ground, a copper plate, or into the kalash. The Sankalp is now taken — proceed with the main ritual.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sankalp in Hindu rituals?
Sankalp is a formal declaration of intent made before any Puja, Vrata, Daan, or Samskara. It names the cosmic time coordinates — Samvatsara, Ayana, Ritu, Masa, Paksha, Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, and Karana — along with the performer's identity (Gotra, Name) to anchor the ritual in both time and space.
Why does location matter in Sankalp?
The Sankalp mantra includes a geographic reference (sthana) — traditionally starting from Jambudvipa, Bharatavarsha, and narrowing to the specific city. Because Tithi, Nakshatra, and sunrise times vary by location, the panchang elements embedded in your Sankalp are location-specific.
What is the difference between a standard Sankalp and a Pitru Sankalp?
A standard Sankalp ends with "karishye" (I shall perform). A Pitru Sankalp — used for Shraddha, Tarpan, and Pind Daan — includes the relation to the departed ancestor and ends with "tarpayishye" (I shall offer libation). The sacred thread orientation also differs: savya (standard) vs apasavya (pitru).
Are Gotra and name mandatory in a Sankalp?
No — the panchang elements (Tithi, Nakshatra, etc.) are the core of the Sankalp and are computed automatically from your city and date. Gotra and name are optional; if unknown, the traditional practice uses a placeholder. The calculator shows blanks (___) for unfilled fields.
What is Udaya Tithi and why does the Sankalp use it?
Udaya Tithi is the Tithi prevailing at sunrise on a given day. Hindu rituals follow this convention rather than the Tithi at midnight or the current moment. If a Tithi ends before sunrise, the next Tithi becomes the Udaya Tithi for that day. Our calculator always uses the Udaya Tithi for accuracy.
