5 Types of Panchak and Their Effects

The type of Panchak depends on which day of the week it starts. Each type carries a different significance:

Rog Panchak(Monday)

Linked to health complications. Starting medical treatments or surgeries during this period is traditionally avoided.

Raj Panchak(Tuesday)

The only auspicious type. Associated with success, authority, and government-related gains. New ventures are considered favourable.

Agni Panchak(Wednesday)

Fire-related risks. Construction involving fire, welding work, or buying combustible materials is avoided.

Mrityu Panchak(Thursday)

Considered the most severe. Cremation and all major life decisions are strongly discouraged during this window.

Chor Panchak(Friday)

Risk of theft, fraud, or material loss. Buying expensive items or making large financial commitments is avoided.

Panchak starting on Saturday or Sunday is sometimes classified as Madhyam Panchak — considered moderate with mixed results.

What Not to Do During Panchak?

Five activities are specifically restricted during any Panchak period (except Raj Panchak for new ventures):

  • 1Roof construction or laying a new slab — the belief is that structures built during Panchak face repeated damage
  • 2Buying or storing wood, straw, or fuel — these are associated with funeral pyres in Vedic symbolism
  • 3Travelling in the south direction — south is Yama's direction, and the combination is considered doubly inauspicious
  • 4Cremation rites — the strongest prohibition, particularly during Mrityu Panchak
  • 5Starting any new auspicious work — griha pravesh, marriage, thread ceremony, or business inauguration

If any of these activities are unavoidable, consult your family pandit for specific shanti rituals to offset the dosha.

Which 5 Nakshatras Fall Under Panchak?

Panchak is defined by the Moon's transit through five specific Nakshatras at the end of the zodiac cycle:

1
Dhanishta3rd & 4th pada only (Aquarius portion, 23°20' onwards)
2
ShatabhishaEntire Nakshatra (Aquarius, 6°40' to 20°00')
3
Purva BhadrapadaEntire Nakshatra (Aquarius 20° to Pisces 3°20')
4
Uttara BhadrapadaEntire Nakshatra (Pisces, 3°20' to 16°40')
5
RevatiEntire Nakshatra (Pisces, 16°40' to 30°00')

These five Nakshatras span the last two Rashis — Kumbha (Aquarius) and Meena (Pisces). The word "Panchak" itself means "group of five."

What is Panchak Yoga?

Panchak is considered a sensitive astrological period that lasts for about 5 days each lunar month. It begins when the Moon enters the third Quarter of Dhanishta Nakshatra and ends when it leaves Revati Nakshatra. Depending on the day it starts, it is classified into Rog, Raj, Agni, Mrityu, and Chor Panchak.

Panchak Yoga 2026 — Common Questions Answered

What is Panchak Yoga in Hindu astrology?

Panchak is a roughly 5-day period each lunar month when the Moon transits the last five Nakshatras — Dhanishta (3rd and 4th quarter), Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada, and Revati. These five Nakshatras fall in the signs of Aquarius and Pisces. During this window, Vedic tradition considers certain activities inauspicious — particularly roof construction, buying wood or fuel, travelling south, and cremation-related rituals. The severity depends on the Panchak type, which is determined by the weekday it begins on.

How many types of Panchak are there?

There are five types: Rog Panchak (starts Monday — health risks), Raj Panchak (starts Tuesday — actually auspicious, linked to success), Agni Panchak (starts Wednesday — fire-related hazards), Mrityu Panchak (starts Thursday — considered the most inauspicious), and Chor Panchak (starts Friday — risk of theft or loss). Some texts also mention Madhyam Panchak for Saturday and Sunday starts, considered moderate. Among these, only Raj Panchak is considered favourable.

Which Panchak is the most dangerous?

Mrityu Panchak is traditionally considered the most severe. It starts on a Thursday and is associated with danger to life. Classical texts specifically prohibit cremation during Mrityu Panchak — the belief is that if a body is cremated during this period, five more deaths may follow in the family. While this is a traditional belief rather than a literal prediction, most families prefer to exercise caution and avoid major life events during Mrityu Panchak.

What should you avoid doing during Panchak?

Five activities are traditionally restricted: (1) roof construction or laying the slab of a new building, (2) buying or storing wood and fuel, (3) travelling towards the south direction, (4) performing cremation rites, and (5) starting new auspicious work like griha pravesh or weddings. These restrictions apply regardless of the Panchak type — though Raj Panchak is considered an exception where new ventures may proceed. The restrictions trace back to the belief that actions done in sets of five during this period multiply consequences.

Can you do griha pravesh during Panchak?

Most traditional Panchang advisors and Jyotishis say no — griha pravesh during Panchak is generally avoided because it falls under "starting a new auspicious activity." However, if the Panchak type is Raj Panchak (Tuesday start), some traditions allow it since Raj Panchak is considered favourable. If you have already fixed a muhurat and it falls in a Panchak window, consult your family pandit for shanti rituals that may offset the dosha.

Is Raj Panchak auspicious or inauspicious?

Raj Panchak is the one Panchak type that is actually considered auspicious. It begins on a Tuesday and is associated with success, authority, and government-related gains. While the general Panchak restrictions on cremation and roof construction still apply, new ventures and business activities started during Raj Panchak are traditionally considered favourable. Think of it as the exception in the otherwise cautious Panchak framework.

How long does Panchak last each month?

Each Panchak period lasts roughly 4 to 5 days — the exact duration depends on the Moon's transit speed, which varies month to month. It begins when the Moon enters the 3rd quarter of Dhanishta Nakshatra (around 23°20' Capricorn) and ends when it exits Revati Nakshatra (at 30° Pisces). In 2026, durations range from about 4 days 10 hours to 5 days 2 hours. There are typically 12–13 Panchak periods in a calendar year.

Which Nakshatras come under Panchak?

Five Nakshatras: Dhanishta (3rd and 4th pada only — the Aquarius portion), Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada, and Revati. These correspond to the last two Rashis of the zodiac — Kumbha (Aquarius) and Meena (Pisces). The word "Panchak" itself means "group of five," referring to this five-Nakshatra sequence. The transit begins when the Moon crosses 23°20' Capricorn into Dhanishta's Aquarius portion.

Is it safe to travel during Panchak?

Travel in general is not banned during Panchak, but specifically travelling towards the south direction is traditionally avoided. The south is associated with Yama (the deity of death) in Vedic cosmology, and combining a southward journey with the Panchak period is considered doubly unfavourable. Travel in other directions — north, east, west — is generally considered acceptable. If a southward journey is unavoidable, some people perform a brief Ganesh prayer before departure.

How is Panchak different from Rahu Kaal?

They are completely different concepts. Rahu Kaal is a daily window of roughly 90 minutes ruled by the shadow planet Rahu — it occurs every day and is calculated based on sunrise time. Panchak, on the other hand, is a multi-day period based on the Moon's Nakshatra transit that happens once a month. Rahu Kaal changes daily; Panchak stays for about 5 continuous days. Both are considered inauspicious windows, but their astronomical basis, duration, and restricted activities are entirely different.
