Sawan — the month of Shravan — is the most sacred stretch of the Hindu calendar for devotees of Lord Shiva. Through these weeks of monsoon, temples fill with the sound of water poured over the Shivling, Mondays are kept as fasts, and a chain of festivals runs from Nag Panchami to Raksha Bandhan.

This hub gathers the whole month in one place: the exact 2026 dates (validated against Swiss-Ephemeris panchang), the Sawan Somwar and Mangala Gauri vrat days, every festival with its date, and links to the puja vidhi, mantras and rituals for each. Where North and South India observe different dates, both are given.

When is Sawan 2026?

The exact Shravan month window — North and South

In North India, which follows the Purnimanta (full-moon-ending) calendar, Sawan 2026 begins on Thursday, 30 July and ends on the Shravan Purnima, Friday, 28 August. In Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and much of South India, the Amanta (new-moon-ending) calendar places Shravan roughly from 13 August to 11 September. Both traditions keep the same festivals; only the month's boundary differs, because the two systems name the waning fortnight of early August differently.

How to observe Sawan, step by step

Why Sawan is sacred to Shiva

Samudra Manthan, Neelkanth and the meaning of jalabhishek

The Puranas trace Sawan's sanctity to the Samudra Manthan — the churning of the cosmic ocean. When the halahal poison rose and threatened all creation, Shiva drank it and held it in his throat, turning it blue; hence Neelkanth, "the blue-throated one." The Devas poured Ganga water over him to ease the burning heat. Offering water to the Shivling in Sawan — jalabhishek — re-enacts that act of cooling grace, which is why water, bilva leaves and a simple, sincere fast are held dearer to Shiva this month than any elaborate offering.

Frequently asked questions

Sawan 2026 dates, vrat and festivals

When does Sawan start and end in 2026?+
Sawan 2026 begins on Thursday, 30 July and ends on Friday, 28 August in North India, which follows the Purnimanta calendar. In the Amanta tradition of Maharashtra, Gujarat and South India, Shravan runs roughly from 13 August to 11 September — the same festivals, a different month window.
How many Sawan Somwar are there in 2026?+
Four Mondays fall within Purnimanta Sawan: 3, 10, 17 and 24 August 2026. Devotees keep the Sawan Somwar Vrat on each of these days, with special worship of Lord Shiva.
When is Sawan Shivratri 2026?+
The Masik Shivratri of Shravan falls on the night of Tuesday, 11 August 2026. The main Nishita Kaal worship is performed around midnight, carrying into the early hours of 12 August.
When is Raksha Bandhan in Sawan 2026?+
Raksha Bandhan is on Friday, 28 August 2026 — the Shravan Purnima. This year there is no Bhadra during the day, so the rakhi can be tied through the morning until the Purnima ends at 9:50 AM. An afternoon muhurat is not applicable in 2026 because the Purnima does not last into the afternoon.
Why is Sawan the holiest month for Lord Shiva?+
According to the Samudra Manthan legend, Shiva drank the halahal poison during Shravan and held it in his throat, becoming Neelkanth; the Devas poured Ganga water to cool him. Offering water to the Shivling — jalabhishek — during Sawan re-enacts this act of grace and is held to be especially fruitful.
What is the difference between Sawan and Shravan?+
They are the same month. “Sawan” is the everyday Hindi name and “Shravan” the Sanskrit one. The month is named after the Shravana Nakshatra, in which its full moon falls.
Source & Disclaimer: Dates and timings are computed with the Swiss Ephemeris for New Delhi and validated against traditional panchang. Regional calendars (Purnimanta vs. Amanta) and community traditions can differ by a day; where they do, both are noted. For a ritual with a fixed muhurat, confirm the timing for your own city.
